Wow! Big Gap in Post and Much Water Under the Bridge

Brent Bowers

From The Family Fiend Shoot

Firstly, I’m resurrecting the blog site because from time to time there’s something I want to say about what’s going on in the world of Brent that’s not appropriate for Mutantville.com where I do most of my posting. Gui Design and Freelance work has been good to me lately so I’m lessening my focus on getting a new job back in my old (Financial World) design field. If the right spot comes along I’d be happy to go back to that corporate world and the commute. To that end, I’ve decided to create a landing page and allow for the portfolio site to be an option instead of the default destination.

The good Lord knows that the subject of my Mom’s accident and my wife’s burn injury have been cover thoroughly on my FaceBook wall so I’ll refrain from drudging through all that here. Suffice to say that I’m glad that it’s behind me and look forward to a much much better year in 2012.

I’ve started playing with a few new music outfits, primarily Blak Saturn, a party time cover band. This is both my first experience doing exclusively covers and also filling the roll of bass player. So buddies of mine needed a bass player to have the pre-requisite for a rock outfit and invited me to fill the spot. I was told that I beat out 2 other applicants for the role and considering I’ve never seriously focused on the bass, I felt good about that. At present I spend hours per week learning not just to play these songs but to do them justice on the bass.

For a part time job that actually pays a little something, this one has been a fun one. I think if the band holds for a year or more with the current talent in the group, we could certainly be one of the best in the region. The experience thus far has been relatively low on drama and high on fun. I hope that it can continue for a while. I enjoy growing my skills and becoming a more well rounded musician.

Late Fall 2010 Update

As 2010 winds itself to a close and another 7 months has slipped by, it seems like a good time for an update to BrentBowers.com. I sense that my artistic self is at a crossroads having spent the past several years producing various things, especially films, it’s time to move into a long term refining/post production stage where we (referring to Mutantville here of course) clear the slate and everything that’s been in post production is completely and utterly committed to it’s final form and published in some way or another.

I’ve also been away from the serious production of my music for far too long. In the past year and a half I’ve slowly started to work my way back into running a band, or working my music up for a 2 man acoustic performance type of delivery. News songs have came to me and through me. It’s getting close to recording time again. Additional opportunities have presented themselves and I’m working in a variety of musical groups at present. Details to follow as things fully pan out.

Some friendships have grown stronger over the past year, while others have waned certainly. Without getting into specifics I find that time seems to be a lot more valuable to me as my kids grow and the world around me continually changes. I really feel inclined to be a little more discerning about whom I let get such large chunks of my time.  That is not to save that I think I’m special by any means. I think each of us has to do this in our own way. Time is short for us all.

I’ll give an example that helps narrow down where my head is at these days. Let’s say I’ve got this friend Juan who is a landscape artist. Juan says to me every time I see him, “I just want to be the best land scaper I can be.” The only thing I can think of is that it must be great to have a singular ambition like that. If only things were so simple for me. I want to be the best dad, husband, songwriter musician, animator, film maker, grappler & writer I can be. My passion is like the light hitting a prism. It’s a blessing and a curse.

Rise and fall turn the wheel ’cause all life is, is really just a circle. BHTM

2010 is On Like Donkey Kong

Holy Guacamole, I haven’t posted to BrentBowers, com in four months. Well, in case you have been hiding under and aren’t on Face Book, you can find my profile here.

So what’s going on? Well, for starters I’ve been as busy as a short legged dog in a hub cap factory. That’s pretty much how I like it.

In no particular order I’ve been involved in updating my office at the house, working with our band MARANG!, working on G.H.O.S.T. & Respawner with Mutantville Production, working in the gym and on fitness and Jiu Jitsu intermittently.

This weekend I’m off to Horror Hound  Weekend with some old friends and some new ones. It should be an absolute blast.

When I return, the band will be just about ready to play our first electric gig with this lineup which will be at Pontiac Point on the patio April 9th, 10th & 11th. I’m calling that our L.A. Tour all at one venue. L.A. Being Lower Albemarle.

It’s shaping up to be another great year! Thanks for stopping by.

G.H.O.S.T. Principle Photography Wraps

To all my friends and fellow artists from the cast & crew of G.H.O.S.T., I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thanks traveling the net this morning. To say that you all managed to exceed my expectations would be an understatement.

From it’s inception, G.H.O.S.T. has been easily the most fun of any project Mutantville Productions has undertaken. Yes, it was the most collaborative story produced to date, but more importantly, I think it was the most properly prepared production and brilliantly cast film we’ve done by a country mile as they say. I do not mean to take anything away from the fine group of actors we have worked with in the past, but the G.H.O.S.T. cast was just superb and in all cases willing to go the extra mile to get the job done.

Kathy

Leading Lady Big Time

Of Kathy, what can I say that’s not apparent. Cute, firey, committed, convincing and awesome! She really wore the brunt of the pressure to make this story come off as believable. Did she deliver? As Sarah Palin might say, “You Betchya!”. Up until the finale shoot I’d say she took the most physical punishment on the shoot, but then Clint’s unexpected hair cut necessitated what must have been a truly harrowing ordeal of a makeup, or rather several makeups, but I’ll get to that in a second. In any case Kathy, we placed our bet on you to make this thing work and you delivered big time! Thanks so much. You are now and forever a Mutantville Player so feel the love!!!!!

A Guy Who We At MVP refer to simply as The M F'n MAN!

A Guy Who We At MVP refer to simply as The M F'n MAN!

Scott Thomas a.k.a “That Pretty Bastard”! What can I say about this guy except that he always, always delivers no matter what. He’s long been the go to guy for leading man duties from the very inception of MVP and once again he doesn’t disappoint. Mutantville kicks Scott’s ass on screen whether it’s with giant tentacles or excruciatingly long makeups and without fail, Scott kicks ass right back! Scott and MVP along with Mr. Britt’s extraordinary makeup design have created what is truly an iconic character in Johnny Reb. Frankly, it kills me not to be able to post any of the photos as they are spoilers, but completely amazing shots of the final scenes stunning makeup.

A drum. A drum! Jack doth come!

A drum. A drum! Jack doth come!

Jack’s role was such important component because he really had to sell the hidden desire and contempt and then ultimately unleash the “Max Gone Crazeee” side of his role. His vast experience made him a real catch for the cast of G.H.O.S.T. And we are proud to have had him. Jack, Johnny Burrito dubs thee Mutantville Player. Wear the mantle proudly!

This Guy Earned His MVP Stripes!

This Guy Earned His MVP Stripes!

Clint had a challenging role that got even more challenging physically than ever intended. Pulling off the heartsick Seth was no easy task. It’s the character every dude loves to hate. The heartbroken ex who we all want to scream, “Man up” at. Then in the end, his hero turn requires him to take some real punishment. Now, due to his “mistake” of getting a hair cut, when of course we had expressly asked that no one do so during the 8 week shoot, this could have put us in a real pickle. The solution Streebo came up with was to batter the character up, covering his head in blood as if he had been beaten severely about the head. This appears to have worked though not the ideal situation. And as Clint was already slated for one makeup in the finale it just added another uncomfortable stretch in sticky makeup. To his credit he never complained and from day 1 we’ve all been impressed by his consistent acting chops given his short time at his craft. Clint you pulled Seth off and made the grade. Mutantville Player thou art!

The Definition of Commitment to a Role

The Definition of Commitment to a Role

Now it’s time to talk about the JAYBIRD. Jason Wheeley. I’m gonna go ahead and take credit for this casting decision. I fought for this guy to have this role because I felt strongly that he’d bring a lot of passion to it. I stand by that as he did exactly that, turning the role of Byron, originally intended as a one line body count filler into something much, much more. Of course to avoid the spoiler I cannot say what, but you guys all know what I’m talking about. Additionally, Jason accepted the job of hosting the making of G.H.O.S.T. Which was shot concurrently with the film. What kind of supporting character actor gets splashed all over the poster and branding package, the kind that makes the most of the role given to him. Nuff said as you’ve all witnessed Jay’s commitment first hand. Jason, you sir are a Mutantville Player!

The Pro Delivers

The Pro Delivers

Dave Tunik. Having what was likely the most nuanced role in G.H.O.S.T., Dave turned G.B. Into a much, much more fleshed out and interesting character who secretly carried a torch for Maya. On the written page G.B. comes and goes in a flash. Again, due to an excellent performance another role is expanded because it captures the viewers interest quadrupling Dave’s screen time. What else would one expect from a professional acting instructor? Perhaps, Bad Dreams? DAVE TUNIK, MUTANTVILLE PLAYER!

The Dynamic Duo

The Dynamic Duo

Behind the scenes was another extraordinary story. One night to our surprise, the lovely Sylvia and Sierra show up and decide to triple the productivity and man or rather woman power of our makeup department. We were delighted when they accepted our invitation to join the crew for the rest of the project and my fervent hope is that they will be back as regular contributors to Mutantville for future projects.

Alan in Command as a Confederate General

Alan in Command as a Confederate General

Sometimes good things just happen to good people. I hadn’t mentioned it publicly but due to unforeseen conflicts our regular sound guru Scott Thompson became unavailable for the rest of the project. Around the same time my old school mate Alan messaged me on Face Book that if we ever needed any help on the project, he was willing to join the crew. Not being one to turn down help, especially from someone who knows a little something about sound, “Weeeeehell.” says I, “Please come and join us.” Alan turned out to be a really great addition to the crew with a morale saving spaghetti recipe and high attention to detail on the sound recording. We even drafted him as an extra in the triage scene. Alan was a real blast to have around and really made a great contribution to G.H.O.S.T.

Fantastic Baby!!!

Fantastic Baby!!!

Luis has just been a tremendous boost to the project, both in terms of his design contribution and also in the morale department. After that grueling shoot Saturday/Sunday when I finally drug out of bed, I seemed to be in a sort of daze and walked around saying “Hello, Baby. Fantastic!” to my kids and wife all day. Luis has shown a great deal of appreciation for MVP proving my long held belief that when someone digs you, it’s hard not to dig them back. He’s just been one of the coolest people I’ve met and it’s been a lot of fun getting to know him. Luis, now to your long list of accomplishments you can add MUTANTVILLE PLAYER!

Todd

The Makeup Genius

Todd A. Britt once again drove us crazy with his procrastination and obstinance, but yet again delivered a world class example of practical makeup effects on pure, unadulterated, raw talented. Whatcha gonna do? When someone’s got it, they’ve got it. The final Johnny Reb makeup was mind blowing! Todd knows he’s a Mutantville Player even though he sometimes tries to pretend he’s not. He’s just waiting for the next call from Streebo to challenge his makeup magic skills.

Streebo & Geo

Streebo & Geo

My partners once again performed admirably. I could never make movies without these guys so I treasure their friendship and critical contributions to MVP. Streebo, who sometimes I think has so much in common with me when it comes to inspiration & cinematic instincts, it often feels like arguing with myself when tough cuts need to be made in the editing phase and Geo who is, in my mind at least, the long distance runner of MVP and can endure an insane number of hours bending and squatting to all sorts of contorted positions with the camera to get that special shot, both of you guys are kickass! Thanks for working with me and letting me be a part of MVP.

Thanks to you all. See you on G.H.O.S.T. Part 2. :) Just kidding. Or am I?

RESPAWNER

Streebo has posted a few notes on the site about my web series, RESPAWNER. To be fair, it’s a 1 minute short film at this point. There’s been some nice buzz generated among the Mutantville Players about doing a web series in 2010 dedicated to the character I’ve created.

About The Show
“What if an undercover police officer could RESPAWN into an invincible demon with powers only limited by her imagination whenever she is murdered?”Ad3

The lovely and talented Sylvia Burris plays the lead role of Lexi Bowman, an undercover police officer with an incredible, secret super power.

Over the course of 10 or so 5 minute episodes she will face amazing super villains in a Bad guy of the week format.

I’ll be sharing more about this new project as the post production for G.H.O.S.T. draws to a close. At present this is soley a Brento project as it just sort of birthed itself organically from a 1 minute test film. If you think that this should be the next MUTANTVILLE effort, why not share your thoughts with good ole uncles Streebo and Geo Swanko. (streebo@live.com, samuitalon@yahoo.com)There is no “I” in team.

In any case, I hope you enjoy the test film.

Written in 20 minutes, shot in about an hour, edited in about 6 hours, this test film (yes I know purist don’t like to hear video called “Film” sorry Streebo) was designed and created as a reel builder for Sylvia Burris, my new side kick, or rather, the person to whom I play sidekick most of the time here lately.

Sylvia, Jeremy and I worked hard on this little ditty so please leave us a comment and a rating on YouTube and subscribe to my channel.

Typical Illusion Video from Demo Sessions At The Realm

Back In The Studio

Typical Illusion Well, the experience yesterday laying down a 4 song demo with Eddie Snuggs in his bombastic new recording studio was just awesome. The guys in the band seemed to really get a charge from being in such a professional and creative environment. Unlike earlier studio experiences I’ve had things were really harmonious and just seem to go so smoothly. I should be getting the cd from Eddie sometime today.

The idea is to go in an lay down new tracks as we write them from time to time. Then perhaps after 6 months or a year of playing them when we know them and really own them, at some point we’ll go in there and make the perfect recordings. With live tracing (bass, drums, vox and guitar all recorded in the same room at once) you can cover a lot of ground quickly.

So, about the new record. These songs are decidedly more pop than the Absolute Zero stuff. I think that they are generally more accessible to the standard listening audience. I’m really thankful to have 2 like minded dudes with similar influences to jam with that is for sure and for certain. The amiable chemistry really comes across on the tunes I think.

MikePrayingYesterday Mike told me that when we first discussed playing together, “You voice really scared me!”. He went on to explain that he expected me to be one of those guys that screams into the mike like some many of the younger bands do these days. I says, “Why Mike? Everyone knows that Johnny Brento is a simple song and dance man.”

We’d all really like to say a big “THANK YOU” to our friend and hence forth musical Godfather Eddie for allowing us access to his amazing studio and spending all day on our demo. You da man Eddie!

G.H.O.S.T is Filming Now!

GHOST-Shoot2 178Well, we are 2 weeks into a 6 or 7 week period of active filming on our new project G.H.O.S.T. I realize that I may be a little biased here but I have to say that so far I have reason to believe that is going to be very, very good.

Here’s why:

  1. The script is the best we’ve had so far. Probably because it was a collaboration in the truest sense of the word. C For Chaos was collaborative but so much of it was written in a vacuum out of necessity. For G.H.O.S.T. we literally invented the whole thing with all of us in a my theater contributing ideas and witting them down. Streebo then turned the ideas into a fine script and even had the script evaluated by some outside experts. I think he did one or possible 2 rewrites and wound up with some thing that could literally serve as a pilot for a TV show. I said it’s TIGHT!
  2. OK, we’ve had some notable acting help in previous projects but I really do think the acting G.H.O.S.T. is standout!
  3. Umm, how can I put this nicely? We have our crap together a lot tighter than when we created C For Chaos. Less wasted effort. More preparation and things are running a lot smoother down to each crew member.
  4. Of course enough cannot be said about the amazing location of the historic Albemarle Opera House. Many thanks to Gene Starnes for making that available to us. When it comes to jewelry in Stanly country, there really is only one logical choice. I’ve bought %100 of my wifes Jewelry there and recommend you check them out if you haven’t already.

Anyways G.H.O.S.T. is going great so far. Be sure to check out mutantville.com for photos from the shoots and more info as the project progresses.

Developing a Story Board Style

As I prepare myself to re-shoot a few crucial scenes from my unfinished film, The Zombie Hunter I have taken a little time to consider how I will approach the storyboards needed to shoot more efficiently. Being completely talentless as actually drawing with a pen on paper, and conversely being a total Mac Daddy with the Poser software, I’ve decided to try to find a style that would let me create these frames right out of the software application. Here are a few test frames for you to check out.

Zombie Hunter In a Jam

Zombie Hunter In a Jam

This shoot will focus primarily on the inter-action between Zombie Hunter, played by myself in live action and the animated zombies. Now that I have a portable green screen setup and a much better camcorder, these should be a great deal easier to chroma key and composite than the original footage.

Meet My Little Friends

Meet My Little Friends

Of course the whole things is total schlock and a big goof on zombie films, but the end results while perhaps a major piece of crap will at least be entertaining.
